Exploring the ways we learn throughout our lives enables children to realise there are different ways of learning – and that some will work better for them than others. To facilitate this, artists Beci, Caroline and Janet designed an exciting Learning Outside The Classroom experience at The Point for children from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School and Conisbrough Ivanhoe Primary School.
Entering a world called Dragonia children solved challenges, experienced different environments and had the opportunity to sing, write, draw and act.
Welcome to Dragonia!
This is the land of dragons and mystery
The land where all the elements are running free
Imagination and magic add spark to the four
Earth, wind, water and the firey roar
But in recent times, the days are getting colder
As the dragons have been getting older and older
The last of the dragons’ sadly has died
But left three eggs warmly kept by her side...
When the children arrived they found that the last three dragon eggs have been stolen. All that remained were three challenges which they had to complete to win back the eggs and save the dragons. All this was hard work – so the children had a themed lunch... firey fruits, scaley sandwiches and rock buns!
Teachers said, “The room which the children worked in was brilliant! Multi-sensory which appealed to all. All learning styles were catered for; visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. Children who maybe struggle with literacy were able to produce work in a non-threatening environment. They could also express themselves through art and music.”
Learning Outside the Classroom sessions at The Point are suitable for up to 30 children. Children must be accompanied by the correct ratio of adults to children. The responsibility for the children on school trips remains with group leaders at all times.
