Movers and Shakers

‘It makes such a difference to confidence and well-being – I feel young again!’

You’re over 50. You’re looking for a new challenge. You’d quite like to make some friends. You know it’s important to keep fit and healthy. You wish you had a little bit more confidence. Maybe, just maybe, you’ve always fancied yourself to be a bit of a dancer…

Movers & Shakers was designed for you! At The Point we believe that dance is for everyone, regardless of gender, age, experience, ability or race, so there’s no reason not to come along and have a go.

'A warm, supportive and welcoming group that you can join in without having had any dance experience'

Every Tuesday morning between 11am and 12.30pm a group of people just like you gather at The Point to dance, improve fitness and generally have a good time. The class begins with a game or activity that wakes up the mind and body. This leads on to a range of activities, from set exercises and dances to creative choreography.

‘It’s rarely the same class twice, it tests my thinking skills as well as my co-ordination, I meet new people and gather with old friends.’

Members of the group create their own dances together inspired by anything from their subconscious daily movements and gestures to their hopes and desires for the future. It's not about which steps they do or do not remember but how they find the confidence to bring something to life through movement. The space is transformed into anything from a stage to a playground as the dancers connect with their bodies and interact creatively with each other.

‘Whatever good I do here has an effect on what I do in the rest of the world’

Performance is not the main drive of the work but can play a key role and offers every member of Movers & Shakers a real sense of achievement. The group has performed in the darts studio and exhibition spaces as well as at community events around Doncaster, often promoting active ageing and advocating dance as a healthy lifestyle choice. They have also appeared in front of larger audiences in summer festivals and in interactive performances within residential and day care settings.
