Sports and arts

Hayley (dance), Beci (drama and music), Lindsey and Marie (sports) are in a planning meeting. They are going to do a session at Heatherwood School for a project called Aiming High, working with children with disabilities and their siblings.

They decide to base their session on the Olympics. Like two opposing teams, arts and sports practitioners are sussing each other out, gradually beginning to see what this collaboration could achieve. Lindsey and Marie seem a little curious as to how this will work, but soon get into the swing of a different way of thinking. They add a competitive element which the artists aren’t used to but agree by the end that it adds to the whole experience.

“It was like a snowball,” says Hayley. “The ideas just kept rolling and growing.”

The list of what to take is a piece of art in itself…red and blue bibs, hoops, bean bags, balloons, a giant tea cup for a trophy (“can we fill it with confetti?”) percussion instruments, spoons and egg shakers, elastic, coloured ribbons, music (Chariots of Fire, Waving Flag…)

The session is a great success, including an Opening Ceremony, a variety of games and a winning section including making and wearing medals, getting into victory poses, singing a celebratory song and doing a lap of honour.

“The sports people put a lot of trust in us,” says Hayley. “Everyone was a winner in the end.”
