Arts could help families break free from smoking

Artists from darts have been busy performing a play about a family, some of whom smoke, which toured 15 areas in Doncaster to bring an arts-lead approach to the issue of nicotine addiction.

Drama artist Maddy Pike explains more: "We did not preach to the audience about smoking. By showing the life of one family and how smoking impacts on them the audience are encouraged to consider the impact of smoking on their own lives. The audience will be able to connect with the characters and have the opportunity to give their views on their actions and offer advice about what they should do."

But don't just take our word for it... Here are a few comments from people who have seen the play:

"Absolutely brilliant! Comical and non-judgemental"

"Very realistic and very informative"

"Very good - made members of the audience think/talk about the issues"

After the performance the audiences took part in a workshop to further explore the actions and motivations of the characters and relate this to their own smoking habits, or habits of their family.

A film by artist Jim Lockey was also shown at the start of the show. It gives a backdrop to the performance featuring vox pop style responses to smoking. Local people of all ages have been filmed sharing their views in recognisable locations around Doncaster.

By the end of the session each family went home with a creative action plan showing the personal steps they want to take towards a smoke free home and highlighting where they will go next to access support.

The play, which uses hard hitting fact and comedy to highlight the issues, was free to audiences and was performed in venues in Denaby Main, Clay Lane, Highfields, Stainforth, Carcroft, Askern, Hyde Park, New Rossington, Toll Bar & Almholme, Woodlands, Mexborough, Hexthorpe, Thorne, Moorends and Edlington.

The project, funded by NHS Doncaster was part of the Enhanced Public Health Programme.
