An inter-generational group from babies to people in their 80s have proudly unveiled a large mosaic art piece which they have created with artist Kate Sully which covers an entire wall in the reception area of Trafalgar House at Carcroft.
The project saw locals, including residents from the a sheltered supported housing scheme and young people involved in the Youth Inclusion Programme (YIP) working together with the aim of breaking down barriers between generations in the community.
Kate explains more: "Together the group decided that the mosaic should have a house theme with each window depicting a different scene because often a house contains a range of ages within a family. We wanted to celebrate this diversity and create professional quality artwork. The older women worked on the multi-coloured roof, the younger people did the YIP logo, a group of older teenagers designed a scene from the local area and a couple of men wanted to include Nelson's hat - obviously linked to the battle of Trafalgar!
"As we worked together each week, barriers between the generations were broken down and new, more understanding relationships were formed which can only benefit the community as a whole."
The Carcroft project follows previous work done in the area by darts as part of Neighbourhood Alliance. The Alliance sees local agencies, including the police, fire service, Positive Futures Sport, youth service, Better Deal and others professionals, working together to tackle anti-social behaviour in different areas of Doncaster by engaging with young people in their neighbourhoods... on Friday nights... on the street... outside the off license... in the park... where young people hang out.
As part of the Neighbourhood Alliance, darts (under the banner of Positive Futures – Arts), uses the arts to explore some of the issues young people face such as alcohol and substance misuse.
