The recent Together we are Greater exhibition at The Point by artist Jacqui Symons featured a 25 metre sculpture made from 2,500 suspended origami boxes.
Using second-hand paper like old newspapers, magazines, books and wrapping paper Jacqui made individual boxes which she arranged to create a colourful sea of pattern, text, images and shape above the visitor’s head which gently moved in the breeze.
The exhibitions in the gallery are often used as a creative stimulus for local people visiting the gallery...
Workshops for children
During the Easter holidays, artist Jacqui ran a workshop for children aged 5-10 and let them in on the secrets of origami.
Children and parents worked together to create beautiful flying birds, butterflies and giant boxes from large pieces of recycled paper. The group was engaged from start to end and the atmosphere was focused and serene.
It was delightful to see people 'getting' the next stage in the process – furrowed brows when attempting to fold the paper in the correct formation and then "aha!" when the correct folds suddenly fell into place and the object began to take shape.
The group had a chance to find out more about Jacqui's bespoke piece of art that she created in the Point Gallery and responded to the smaller piece in the glazed link at The Point after lying on the ground and gazing up at it. Everybody left with a new skill and a happy face!
