Young people create free-wheeling sculptures

Ten young people from Doncaster Housing for Young People (DHYP) and artist Kate Sully have been busy creating 3D sculptures which celebrate how they feel about being a young person in Doncaster.

The sculptures started life as two old bike wheels and the group used mixed media to decorate them. Each one reflects different aspects of the group’s feelings – one uses nature, plants and animals to express the more emotional aspects and interests of the group, the other focuses on the more vibrant and adventurous side of being a young person.

Artist Kate Sully explains more: "I've been working with the group at their centre on Chequer Road. After chatting about their interests, together we came up with the wheel sculpture idea as a good way for the group to all get involved in creating art pieces that promote their ideas and feelings in a positive light. Individually they created elements of interest to them and then worked as a group to bring the sculptures together.

"The emotional wheel uses words suggested by the young people and natural materials such as foliage, shells, pearls and butterflies. The vibrant wheel is more colourful celebrating their adventurous side and is decorated using media like dice, playing cards, badges, jewels and beads and words describing their interests and ideas positively."

Both wheels will be exhibited at The Point from 1st – 11th June in the gallery.

After the exhibition the sculptures will be displayed at DHYP. DHYP provides support and accommodation for 16-25 year olds, offering a supported lodgings scheme, outreach floating support service and providing advice services for young, vulnerable and homeless people. They encourage and support sustainable independent living and homelessness prevention work to help vulnerable young people successfully maintain their tenancies.

The project was funded by Doncaster New Deal for Communities (NDC)
