Exploring with Granny Mabel

In April 2007 darts was approached by Daisy Chain Nursery in Mexborough, who wanted to work with artists to enhance creative opportunities for children in their nursery. Staff at the nursery had already accessed training with darts through the Leaping Imaginations project and were very enthusiastic. Six artists created workshops on the theme of 'exploring' to offer children and staff in the nursery a wide range of experiences. Sessions included story making, creating sensory drawings, movement play, exploring sounds and giant drawings.

The nursery had asked one of the artists, Katie Matthews, to go into the nursery in character as "Granny Mabel"; they had built up the anticipation by telling the children lots about her life.

Katie said: "The children knew so much about me and had loads of questions to ask, they really wanted to look after Granny Mabel."

One little boy at the nursery was really apprehensive about working with the artists, but after lunch when the artist returned he had independently chosen to sing one of the songs from that morning into the nursery's microphone!
