Students share dance inspired by exhibition

Nine dance students studying for a degree at the University Centre, Doncaster have performed a movement piece called ‘Inspired Movement’ in the Gallery at The Point – their response to the exhibition of work by artist Jacqui Symons during spring 2010.

As part of their BA (Hons) Dance Practice, first year students performed the site specific movement piece with angular moves inspired by the sea of origami boxes suspended high in the gallery space.

Lecturer Janine Smith explains more: "The performance is designed to be viewed from the mezzanine level of the gallery above the boxes with dancers creating a kaleidoscope effect with their body shapes, reaching towards the boxes above.

"This is the first time our students have performed in a gallery. The Gallery at The Point gives students the chance to experience dancing in a different kind of environment – no stage and no lights."

Performed to the 'Music of China' all the students were involved in the chorography of the piece along with Janine and Louise Wheatley.

The Younger Orangery (a group from North Ridge Community School which meets weekly at The Point) watched the performance as part of their work towards their Bronze Arts Award.
