Imagine a place where anything goes... you never get 'it' wrong and every week you find a new way of moving and being yourself.
Movers and Shakers is an over 50's dance class where adventure, imagination, risk and rebellion are the norm.
On 13th January 2009 the group was visited by BBC Look North and The Yorkshire Post who featured the thriving group at the local launch of the Change4Life initiative. The programme is the cornerstone of the Government's response to the shocking scale of the obesity epidemic as it aims to "kickstart a lifestyle revolution" by helping people "eat well, move more and live longer".

The group meet once a week, every Tuesday morning 11:00-12:30pm to dance, improve fitness and generally have a good time. The class begins with a catch up and a warm up -often a game or an activity that wakes up the mind and body. The group then do a range of activities from set exercises and dances to a creative class. The creative class will often include the exploration of a theme and choreography.
It's not about what you do or do not remember, not about the steps but how you get there, how you find the confidence to 'bring something to life'.
So, why dance? What can it do for me?
Here are what some members of the group have to say:
'A warm, supportive and welcoming group that you can join in without having had any dance experience'
'It makes me fitter, it’s great fun'
'They make me feel young and happy, I do things I never thought possible with a great deal of laughter!'
'The blood gets pumping, the heart races and imaginations run wild - we transform the space into anything from a stage to a playground. We connect with our bodies, remind each other of muscles we forgot we had and connect with each other as dancers and a group of friends'
