New View for adults with mental health issues

New View is a long-term darts project that aims to give adults with mental health issues the opportunity to express themselves through music, drama and dance.

Participants work alongside darts artists to sample a variety of different artforms and engage in creative activities that are both enjoyable and educational. The group sing, use percussion instruments and even produce their own songs together, often accompanied by simple movement exercises, and are currently working towards creating a CD of their work. Support workers attend sessions to help and encourage their clients to get involved.

New View aims to boost the self-esteem of those taking part by giving them the chance to discuss the improvements in their confidence and happiness levels that have been stimulated by the activities – the changes in their moods and attitudes following sessions are often amazing. Many participants are socially vulnerable and find their time with the artists a form of release and an opportunity to discover the joy of art in a friendly, calm and welcoming environment which does not put any pressure on the individual.

Christopher regularly attends sessions and enjoys the chance to make new friends:

"I like seeing my friends and meeting new people. Everyone here is very nice."

Fellow participant Claire finds the creativity the most enjoyable aspect of New View:

"it’s a safe, happy environment where I can get in touch with my creative side."

New View's weekly workshops always welcome newcomers. Contact darts on 01302 341662 or email phill@thepoint.org.uk for more information.
