On Friday 21st November 2008 darts (Doncaster Community Arts) will be hosting a day to "Get Doncaster Dancing!"
Through focused dance and movement workshops across a wide range of groups, Doncaster residents will be encouraged to choose dance and movement as part of a healthier lifestyle and to reap the benefits that only dance can offer, in order to improve physical, mental, personal and social lifestyles.
We believe that anyone can enjoy and should have access to the benefits of dancing regardless of age or ability. Everyone can relate to dance as we all have at some stage in our lives engaged with dance/ movement. To dance therefore is in our very "make up". By beginning to dance we are choosing to move, to be active and to have awareness of our bodies, making improvements to our health and fitness. This programme will use dance as a creative medium for improving the health and physical and emotional well being of everyone who participates in it.
darts is able to draw on a wide range of dancers with specialist dance styles including Contemporary Dance, Chair Dance, Hip Hop, Capoeira, Salsa, African dance and Movement play to name just a few. We work with dancers from different cultures who bring a wealth of experience and passion to enable others to move creatively.
To promote the whole initiative, a series of sessions focussing on song and dance will be held in the ten weeks prior to the main event, leading up to a celebratory performance in the town centre. Singing has similar health benefits to dance, with research linking it to improved memory function, posture, breathing and general well-being. People will be recruited from diverse communities in Doncaster and there will be original songs about dance as well as traditional songs and dances from cultures around the world. Participants would be able to continue after the project by joining darts' long-running Quirky Choir.
There will be workshops run by professional dancers on the 21st November, check out our website www.thepoint.org.uk for more info nearer the date to book.
If you've got a great dance piece to show, we've got some brilliant spaces for you to get down and boogie in front of an audience! If you're part of a group who would like to share work just give Rebecca or Helen a call on 01302 341662 and we'll get moving together.
We'll also be sharing the dance pieces that we've been creating with our groups.
You could even be part of our working group - Groups listed will receive a regular e-bulletin with updates about dance and movement opportunities in Doncaster- there will be the opportunity within this to post listings/have groups/events featured to share your work with others.
So get in touch and let's "Get Doncaster Dancing!"
This project is funded by Doncaster PCT's Health Turnaround Fund.
