FAQ guide: Creative Directions

This FAQ guide answers any questions you might have about coming along to The Point on a Wednesday to attend Creative Directions. If your question isn’t answered here, feel free to drop us a message at darts@thepoint.org.uk and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

 

How do I get to The Point? Where is it?

The Point is located on South Parade, just opposite the Regent Hotel.

You can find plenty of information about how to get to The Point on our Visit Us page, including information on parking, access and the nearest bus stops and services.

Do I need a referral from my GP to attend?

You don’t need a referral from anywhere to attend Creative Directions. If you think that attending these creative sessions would help you, then you’re welcome to come along.

Can I come with my support worker/family member/friend?

Absolutely – we want you to feel comfortable at Creative Directions. If it helps you to bring someone, then by all means bring someone.

How much does it cost?

Attending Creative Directions is free; you are welcome to attend and make use of any available materials in both the self-facilitated morning session and the artist-led afternoon session.

What can I expect from a Creative Directions session?

You can expect free art materials to use and people in the same boat as you. If you’re unsure of where to go when you arrive, our Reception team can give you guidance. The morning session (10am – 12pm) is self-facilitated, whilst the afternoon session (1:30pm – 3:30pm) is artist-led. If you’d like more details on the difference between the morning and the afternoon, read on – we address this below.

In terms of art, there’s plenty you could get involved in – drawing, painting, crafting, music, and much more.

Do I need any previous experience?

You don’t need any experience to take part! Creative Directions exists to give you the opportunity to socialise, to make art, and to hopefully feel a bit better. It’s not a competitive or cliquey environment – it’s just a group of like-minded people getting together and being creative.

Do I need to book? Do I need to sign up for a certain amount of sessions?

There’s no need to book; you can just turn up on the day. You don’t have to commit to a certain amount of sessions when you attend – you’re free to come and go as you please – but we think people benefit from regular attendance so we would encourage you to come to as many sessions as you can.

Can you give more details on the difference between the morning session and the afternoon session?

In the self-facilitated morning session you can make use of the art materials in whatever way you want. Our team are still on-hand to help you out and have a chat.

In the artist-led afternoon session, one of our talented team of freelance artists will come in to guide the whole group. For example, our visual artist Karen might encourage everyone to have a go at felting, or musician Gary might have everyone play an instrument they’ve never tried before. The afternoon tends to be a bit more collaborative, but if you would prefer to continue doing your own thing, you can.

Do I have to stay all day?

You are welcome to stay for as long or as short as you wish. There’s no pressure – it’s up to you.

What do I do over the lunch break?

The lunch break between the morning and afternoon session is one and a half hours long and you are welcome to spend it however you wish. We have a lovely café onsite which you can use – lots of Creative Directions participants tend to socialise in there over the lunch break. Alternatively there are a number of cafes in the local vicinity, including Prego just over the road, the library café and Cast theatre’s café just around the corner, and of course all the eateries the town centre has to offer.

What types of people come to Creative Directions?

Creative Directions is a very varied group. We have a really wide age range, from 18 – 80, and there’s a mix of men and women. Some people come along of their own accord and some people attend as part of structured recovery programmes, having been referred from rehabilitation/recovery units. It’s a real mix.

What if something goes wrong?

We have a fantastic team of staff and volunteers on hand to support you. They’ll make themselves known to everyone at the start of the session so you’ll know who to look out for. If you have a problem they’ll help you to the best of their abilities.

We are a charity, not a mental health support organisation, and as such there is a limit to what we can provide. You can find more information about what we do not provide here.

Creative Directions in the community:
